From the time I began telling stories in the late 80’s, I have been attracted to fairy tales and in particular, to the figure of the princess. Early on, I noticed a discrepancy between the princess I found in the stories and her image in popular culture. The very word “princess” has become a pejorative—associated with indulgence, weakness and dependency. Yet in fairy tales, the princess is an entirely different character—who quietly shows us how the thorniest predicaments of life can be transformed by love.
